Once that's done, if you've installed the Portal 2 Authoring Kit like you were supposed to, navagate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Portal 2\bin and find an application called vpk.exe, make a shortcut to that exe, and place in the same directory as your "addons" folder, then drag the "addons" folder onto vpk.exe. Make a folder called what ever you want (not in the Lost Coast directory) Mine's "addons".Ĭopy the folders cfg, downloadlists, maps, and resource from your Lost Coast Directory, into your "addons" folder. Start off by navagating to your Lost Coast directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\lostcoast by default) I prefer to open a second window for what you're about to do, but it's up to you. But you need to have certain files from Lost Coast in a certain place, or else nothing works. You can play the game of Half Life 2, everything works just fine, there's sound for everything, and you have a Portal Gun. But in that case, the original mod was free, and the creator only charged for it after it became a standalone game experience.I quite honestly have no idea why this works. Many people, myself included, had no problem throwing down a few bucks for a game like The Stanley Parable, which originally began as a free mod built in Half-Life 2's Source engine. $7 on Steam goes a long way, since the digital distribution service often features huge discounts on retail games. Many say they'd be perfectly happy with the mod if it were free. I see it as coming down to an issue of quality: Most of Aperture Tag's complainants cite its poorly written script, sub-par voice acting, and general lack of polish as reasons why it is not worth $7.
Even the notion of the paint gels isn't original-it was included in the latter half of the Portal 2 campaign. Though presumably featuring some sort of original content, they take advantage of assets, characters, mechanics and more that were built by the game's original developers.
On the other hand, mods are built upon existing games.
